Lynne’s Garden-Fresh Salsa
Inspired by Mexico City, made with homegrown love
I first learned how to make this salsa when I was working as a facilities manager in Mexico City, many years ago. The amazing team I worked with taught me that the best salsa doesn’t come from a jar — it comes from the garden, a chopping board, and a bit of muscle!
This simple, super-fresh recipe tastes nothing like the processed versions you find in the supermarket. It’s bold, bright, and totally addictive — and it’s even better when you’ve grown the ingredients yourself.
Ingredients:
4–5 ripe homegrown tomatoes, chopped
1 small white onion, finely chopped (if you’ve grown your own — even better!)
A handful of fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped
Optional: a fresh green chilli or a dash of lime juice for a little zing
Salt to taste
Method:
Grab a sharp knife and get chopping — this salsa is all about texture, so skip the food processor!
Finely chop the tomatoes, onion, and coriander.
Add everything to a bowl, sprinkle with salt, and give it a good mix.
That’s it! It’s fresh, flavourful, and ¡Está listo! (It’s ready!)
Serving Ideas:
Scoop it up with crisps in the garden
Spoon it over nachos with melted cheese
Add it to tacos, grilled meats, or your morning eggs
This salsa is all about celebrating the flavours of your garden — and the joy of sharing something homemade, real, and full of soul. Just like the team in Mexico taught me.

Top Health Tip: Why Homegrown Tomatoes Are Better for You
Did you know that homegrown tomatoes can contain up to twice the vitamin C of supermarket ones? That’s because once picked, tomatoes quickly start to lose their nutritional value — and shop-bought ones are often picked unripe, stored, and transported long before they reach your plate.
When you grow your own and harvest at peak ripeness, you’re getting a powerful dose of:
Vitamin C – for immune support and glowing skin
Lycopene – a natural antioxidant linked to heart health and reduced inflammation
Vitamin A – great for your eyes and immune system
Plus, no plastic packaging, no food miles, and a flavour that’s off the charts. Another win for the grow-your-own life!
