A Simple Top Tips Checklist for Strong, Healthy Plants
If you’ve ever grown seedlings that look tall, thin and floppy, you’re not alone. “Leggy” seedlings are one of the most common problems for home growers, especially in early spring. The good news is, it’s easy to fix once you know what causes it. This is something that i struggled with when I started my seed growing journey.
Leggy seedlings happen when plants stretch in search of light and strength. Instead of growing sturdy stems and healthy leaves, they grow tall and weak.
Here’s my simple checklist to help you grow strong, happy seedlings from the start.
✅ DO: Give Them Plenty of Light
Light is the number one reason seedlings become leggy.
• Place seedlings on the brightest windowsill you have • South or west facing windows are best • Turn trays every day so plants grow evenly • If possible, use a grow light in darker months
Seedlings need lots of light from day one. If they don’t get it, they will stretch towards the window and become thin and weak.
❌ DON’T: Rely on Weak Winter Light
Early in the year, natural light is often not strong enough.
• Don’t assume a bright room is enough • Don’t place seedlings far from windows • Don’t leave them in shady corners
Even if a room feels light to us, it may be too dim for young plants.
✅ DO: Keep Them Cool (But Not Cold)
Warm rooms encourage fast, weak growth.
• Aim for cooler rooms after seedlings appear • Around 15 to 18°C is ideal for most plants • Open windows slightly on mild days
Cooler temperatures help seedlings grow slowly and build strength.
❌ DON’T: Leave Them Next to Radiators
Heat plus low light is a recipe for leggy plants.
• Don’t place trays above radiators • Don’t put them near heaters or fires • Avoid warm airing cupboards
Too much warmth makes plants stretch before they’re ready.
✅ DO: Water Little and Often
Watering properly helps roots develop well.
• Keep compost slightly moist, not wet • Water from the bottom if possible • Let the surface dry slightly between watering
Strong roots help support strong stems.
❌ DON’T: Overwater
Too much water weakens seedlings.
• Don’t let pots sit in water • Don’t soak compost constantly • Avoid soggy trays
Overwatered plants grow soft and unstable.
✅ DO: Give Them Space
Seedlings need room to grow.
• Thin out crowded trays • Pot on when roots appear • Space plants so leaves don’t touch
Crowded seedlings compete for light and become leggy.
❌ DON’T: Leave Them Packed Together
It’s tempting to keep every seedling, but overcrowding causes problems.
• Don’t let trays become jungle-like • Don’t be afraid to remove weaker plants
Fewer strong plants are better than lots of weak ones.
✅ DO: Gently Move the Air Around Them
A little movement helps build strength.
• Open windows on calm days • Gently brush plants with your hand • Use a small fan on low setting if needed
This mimics outdoor conditions and strengthens stems.
❌ DON’T: Keep Them in Still Air All the Time
Completely still air leads to soft growth.
• Avoid closed rooms all day • Don’t keep lids on trays for too long
Seedlings need fresh air once they’ve sprouted.
✅ DO: Plant Leggy Seedlings Deeper
If seedlings do get leggy, you can often rescue them.
• When potting on, bury stems deeper • Tomatoes especially love this • Support with soil up to the first leaves
Many plants will grow new roots along buried stems.
❌ DON’T: Give Up Too Quickly
Leggy seedlings aren’t always a disaster.
• Don’t throw them away straight away • Try repotting and improving light • Give them time to recover
With the right care, many will bounce back.
