Why Early March Is the Perfect Time to Paint Your Garden Woodwork**

At the beginning of March there is always a noticeable shift in the garden. The light is stronger, the days feel longer and suddenly you start spotting all the little jobs that winter has left behind. One of the best things you can do at this time of year is give your garden woodwork a fresh coat of protection. Fences, raised beds, sheds, pergolas and summerhouses take a real beating over a British winter. Months of rain, cold and damp air slowly wear down the protective layer on the wood. As the weather begins to warm and we get those slightly drier spring days, it becomes the perfect window to paint and touch things up before the garden season really gets going.

I always reach for a can of Cuprinol. It is a brand I have trusted for years and one that I have used in many of my garden designs, including projects at Chelsea and work at the Ideal Home Show. When you are designing outdoor spaces that need to look good but also survive British weather, reliability matters. The protection it gives outdoor wood is excellent, particularly the Ducksback range which I have found to be one of the most dependable options.

Making things weatherproof in the UK is not an easy task, so it is important to give structures the best possible start for the season ahead. A good treatment now helps the wood resist rain, moisture and general wear throughout the year. Another thing I love about using it is the huge range of colours available. Painting woodwork is not just about protection, it is also a fantastic way to introduce colour and design into the garden. A dull fence can suddenly become a backdrop for plants, and a simple shed or summerhouse can turn into a real focal point.

This week I have been doing exactly that in my own garden, giving my summerhouse a fresh coat of Ducksback in black. It instantly sharpened the whole space and created a beautiful contrast for all the green growth that is starting to appear around it. So if you are looking for a satisfying early spring job, grab a brush, pick a colour and give your garden woodwork some attention. A few hours of painting now will protect it for months and completely refresh the feel of your outdoor space just as the gardening season begins.
