February Growing Tips
What's going on in February?
As the days start getting longer there’s a hint of optimism in the air in February. Spring feels like it’s just around the corner, and you’ll be able to get outside on those sunny days to start looking over the state of your outside growing spaces. But keep your thermals on for all of those outside tasks!
You can make a start on getting your garden ready for the upcoming growing season, but only when the weather is decent. Otherwise stick to the indoor planning jobs!
The weather in February
February can actually be colder than January, delivering particularly hard frosts. The end of the month can often brighten and warm up, convincing us that winter is over…but it can then come back with a vengeance! So please do keep an eye on that weather forecast.
We can still see a lot of rainfall, so keep off of the soil when it’s very wet, otherwise you may compact it down and push all of the air out of it. This then makes it less oxygenated, and thus less effective for growing your fruit and vegetables.
Main things to accomplish
Keep sorting and cleaning any gardening equipment and wipe down greenhouse glass. Check what tools you already own, and order anything else you may need.
Start preparing outside beds for growing your fruit and vegetables when the weather allows. If you’ve planted seedlings, make sure you’re nurturing them so that they’re ready to plant out in the next month or two.
