If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know how much I adore discovering places — and people — who live and breathe plants. One such gem is Architectural Plants, a truly extraordinary nursery in West Sussex that specialises in statement trees, topiary, palms, and bold, sculptural specimens. But there’s so much more to them than stunning plants — they offer a full suite of services and a deeply rooted ethos that makes them more than just a nursery.
Guy Watts, Vision & Values
At the heart of it all is Guy Watts — founder, plant evangelist, and all-round gardener cheerleader. Guy’s passion for plants is absolutely infectious, and his energy, humour, and generosity with his knowledge make every visit a joy. He’s cultivated a space that’s not only about selling plants, but about nurturing curiosity, sharing skills, and bringing more people into the world of horticulture — especially younger generations. Supporting the next wave of gardeners, inspiring creativity, and making plants accessible are all woven into what they do. That resonates deeply with me. In fact, look out for a fun podcast coming up that we recorded on the day.
Services They Provide
Architectural Plants is not your average nursery. They combine beauty, expertise, and full-service support across many areas. Some of their key offerings include:
Garden Design, Planting & Creative Maintenance — They design, plant, and maintain gardens of all sizes, helping clients bring bold, sculptural visions to life.
Plant Hire & Rental Services — For events, photo shoots, or large creative projects, they offer a bespoke hire service using their collection of trees, shrubs, topiary, and pots to transform spaces. (With a minimum budget requirement.)
Courses, Workshops & Events — From propagation workshops to pruning masterclasses, they open their doors for learning, skill-building, and sharing plant wisdom.
Venue & Event Hire — Their grounds serve as a backdrop for weddings, filming locations, and venue hire for corporate or creative events.
Planting & Delivery — They deliver and plant selected specimens, assist clients with the right plant for the right place, and provide full aftercare. Their team handles both retail and trade clients.
Pot Recycling & Infrastructure Support — They run services such as pot recycling and sustainability-minded practices in their nursery operations.
This means whether you want a single specimen, a full garden redesign, or a workshop day under the sun, Architectural Plants can support you end to end.
What They Grow & Offer for Sale
Their plant range is as ambitious and expressive as their design philosophy:
Topiary, Balls & Blobs — They have a strong focus on sculptural evergreens and formal shapes to add architectural structure to gardens.
Evergreens & Screening Specimens — For hedging, structure, and privacy planting.
Hardy Exotics & Tropical Specimens — Palms, bananas, and more unusual or architectural tropicals suitable for sheltered or mild gardens.
Rare & Home-Grown Plants — They nurture rarities and their own grown stock, making unique plants accessible.
Screening Trees, Pruned Specimens & Niwaki — Japanese inspired pruning (niwaki), shapely specimens, and structural planting features.
Indoor & House Plants, Accessories & Garden Sundries — They also stock pots, tools, garden accessories, and support home & garden lifestyle items.
They label plants with a “traffic-light hardiness” system to help growers (even those who think they have a brown thumb) choose plants suited to their environment.
Our Shared Journey (Willow, Friends & Collaboration)
We first worked together at the Ideal Home Show, where our shared passion for plants led to an instant connection. Over time, we’ve become firm friends, Jason and Guy and myself seem to have the same crazy sense of humour and just love what we do. Their genuine warmth, shared humour, and deep plant knowledge make every interaction feel like collaborating with kindred spirits.
One day, I visited their Propagation Workshop, carrying cuttings from my beloved willow tree — the tree that’s been my sanctuary, my thinking place, my leafy confidant. Guy and the team took me through nurturing those cuttings into baby willows, and I couldn’t help but feel a little emotional (in the best way). It’s as if my tree’s spirit gets to follow me to my new garden. That moment encapsulates everything beautiful about what Architectural Plants does: connection, growth, and rooted hope.
Why I Recommend Them (and You Should Too)
Architectural Plants is more than just a nursery. It’s a place of inspiration, education, friendship, and creativity. Their services offer more than products — they offer support, partnership, and horticultural optimism. For anyone who dreams of building gardens that delight, surprise, feed, or heal — they’re among the best.
If you ever get the chance, do visit, book a workshop, or explore what they have to offer. And if you mention the willow story, I bet they’ll smile.
