Want to give your veg a boost without buying a bottle of the smelly stuff from the garden centre? You can whip up a super-charged organic liquid fertiliser using what’s already in your garden – it’s easy, eco-friendly, and your plants will love you for it.
This one’s a classic, made from nettles and a few green waste bits – packed with nitrogen and perfect for leafy veg, tomatoes, and just about anything that’s having a growth spurt!
Ingredients
A good bucketful of fresh nettles (gloves on! No roots, just leaves & stems)
Optional: a handful of comfrey leaves (great for potassium – ideal if you’ve got fruiting veg)
A bottle or jug for storing the final magic mix
A stick for stirring
Rainwater (or tap water left to stand for 24 hours)
A big bucket or bin with a lid (or cover with a board)
How to Make It:
Chop the nettles (and comfrey if using) roughly and stuff them into your bucket untilit’s about two-thirds full.
Top up with rainwater to cover the leaves completely.
Cover loosely with a lid or board to keep bugs out but allow gases to escape (trustme, you’ll want that ventilation!).
Stir daily (or as often as you remember!) with your stick. It’ll start to smell – thatmeans it’s working!
After about 2–3 weeks, the liquid will be dark and whiffy and the leaves will haveturned to sludge. That’s your cue!
Strain the liquid into bottles or watering cans. Compost the leftover leaf mush.
How to use it:
Dilute it! This is strong stuff. Use about 1 part fertiliser to 10 parts water.
Water the soil around your plants, not the leaves.
Apply once a week during the growing season.
This natural brew is free, full of goodness, and a fab way to close the loop in your garden. Plus, you get major eco-points for using what nature gives you – just maybe warn the neighbours before opening the lid… It’s not exactly Chanel No.5
