Chelsea Flower Show: Its History, Magic and Why It’s the Highlight of My Gardening Year

There are garden shows… and then there is the Chelsea Flower Show
Held each May in the grounds of the beautiful Royal Hospital Chelsea, this iconic event has been at the very heart of British gardening for over a century, first taking place in 1913. It has grown into one of the most prestigious flower shows in the world, setting trends, launching plants, and inspiring gardeners of every level, from tiny balconies to sprawling country estates.

What makes Chelsea so special, beyond the breathtaking gardens and cutting edge design, is its setting. The show is hosted within the grounds of the Royal Hospital, home to the legendary Chelsea Pensioners. These are retired soldiers of the British Army who have served their country with distinction, and who now live at the hospital as part of a unique and historic community. You’ll often spot them during show week in their striking scarlet coats, adding a sense of heritage and pride that makes the whole event feel incredibly British and deeply rooted in history.

Becoming a Chelsea Pensioner is an honour in itself. Residents are typically former soldiers over the age of 65 who have served for many years and are in receipt of a military pension. Life at the Royal Hospital offers not just accommodation, but companionship, care, and a continued sense of belonging. During Chelsea week, they are very much part of the magic.
And then there is the Royal Horticultural Society, the force behind it all. I have to say, it has been an absolute privilege to work alongside the RHS throughout my gardening journey. Their support, encouragement, and genuine kindness have meant so much to me over the years. There is such a generosity of spirit within the gardening world, people who are always willing to share knowledge, swap ideas, and cheer each other on, and I truly believe that is a huge part of what makes Chelsea feel so magical.
For me, Chelsea is more than just a show. It’s a place that holds so many memories. I’ve had the absolute privilege of building three gardens there, each one a labour of love, creativity, and more than a few late nights! And now, to return as a trade stand judge, assessing other people’s creations with kindness and understanding, really does feel like a full circle moment.
There’s something electric about the week. The buzz, the beauty, the anticipation of what’s around each corner. It’s where ideas come to life and where the gardening world gathers to celebrate everything we love about growing, designing, and connecting with nature.
And of course… I’ll be sharing all the good stuff with you. The must see gardens, the clever ideas, the little details you might otherwise miss. So whether you’re heading there yourself or soaking it all up from afar, consider me your eyes and ears on the ground
